What is ice tie dying?
What is ice tie dying, you ask? Ice tie dye is almost just like tie dye, except you put ice cubes on top of the garment before you start tie dying it, and let the ice melt. The water from the melted ice dilutes the dye, which creates a pretty sweet tie dye pattern.
But before we get into all that, lemme just tell you about this gem of a sweatshirt I found to dye at Wal-Mart:
Yep. You read that right. Wal-Mart special, baby. The quality of this is killer. Even if you don’t wanna deal with tie dying it, go ahead and pick one up if they aren’t sold out. (Pretty sure they’re still available online here but they are sold out of the cream color at my store. Yes, I went back for a second one.)
What I love about this sweatshirt is that it is perfect to wear with leggings. It’s a little longer in the back and has a dropped sleeve, which gives it an edgier, oversized, fit.
I wanted to tie dye it to make it look like the more expensive Rebecca Minkoff “Rosie” sweatshirt, and I have to say, I got pretty close.

Can you use liquid dye for DIY ice tie dying?
Yes! I almost always use liquid dye to tie dye my shirts. Shop below for everything I used.
1. Wet your shirt before you start this tie dye technique.
Pro tip: Do this outside on concrete. The dye won’t stain a concrete patio and you can easily clean up with the water hose.
Get the shirt completely wet, then squeeze out the excess water.
For the peach colored shirt, I actually used tan dye.
