Homemade headboard idea for the One Room Challenge
Okay, ya’ll, it’s week 5 of the Better Homes and Gardens One Room Challenge, and yes, I painted over the green wall.. I was not feeling it, so I had to do what I had to do. If you missed it, you can check out the ORC highlight bubble on my IG page.
Anyway, since I want to keep the budget affordable in this guest bedroom transformation, I decided to make a headboard out of something that I already had at home. I scoured Pinterest for ideas. I even entertained the thought of making a headboard out of cardboard or air-dry clay. (wut??)
I ultimately decided that wood would be the best bet, so I set out to our woodshed to see if I could get any ideas for a headboard I could make for cheap.

DIY headboard from mirror
Look what I found! Even though Walt reluctantly chipped away all the glass shards when this mirror arrived broken, I was certain that I could give the frame a new life.
Here’s how..

How to cut mirror
I love the look of half-circle and arched headboards, so I wanted to keep the arch of the mirror intact. I was able to cut this wooden frame easily with my miter saw, even though the blade is pretty dull after we used it to cut all of that flooring you see under the mirror.
but if you have a queen or even a king, this could still work. You would just have to turn the outside pieces so that they would be shorter and wider.
How to assemble the wooden headboard
I put the headboard together with wood glue, some screws, and a mending plate. (I think that’s what it’s called.) I also added an extra beam to the bottom for extra stability.
Add cane webbing to make your rattan headboard complete
I found this beautiful cane webbing on Etsy for $10.87 a ft. I soaked the cane webbing in water for about 15 minutes beforehand to make it easier to work with, and I attached it with wood glue. I put some bricks on top to make sure it stayed flat overnight.
How to attach headboard to the wall.
I knew this headboard needed to be free-standing since our mattress was on a frame instead of a bed. The metal hangers on the back of the mirror were in the perfect place to hang the headboard, so I didn’t do anything special to hang it. I used painters’ tape to get the perfect placement for the nails on the wall and hung it up!
I decided to add 2,800 pillows…
Aaaannnd I think it’s done!
Next week I’ll try to get my nightstand makeover going.. but we’ll see. School is whipping me right now.
As always, thanks for stopping by! If you are a guest participant, I’d love to follow along with you as well!
