This easy, antique-inspired, bas relief sculpture is a unique way to make eclectic decor for your walls. This DIY aesthetic wall art tutorial is quick and simple and gives a homemade touch to any room decor.
How do I make my own wall art?
There are many DIY wall art ideas that you could do, from painting to tapestries. I’m in the process of planning a moody, eclectic, gallery wall for my dining room decor.
I want something similar to this one, to go over a buffet style cabinet I plan to construct in the near future.
I’m thinking a dark accent wall, maybe green, maybe black even.
And I’m gonna create LOTS of wall art to go on it.
And I’m taking you with me. Let’s get started on the first piece I’m gonna make: A Victorian cameo style, bas relief sculpture.

- Model Magic

- Oval, Antique Style Frame OR
- Wooden Plaque
- Antique Gold Rub n Buff (optional)
- Cream Acrylic Paint
- Mod Podge (I used a gloss, but a matte finish would be lovely.)
Step by step DIY relief sculpture.
But here’s a few shots of me painting the wooden plaque, just in case you like the way that looks better.

- Roll out your clay on a clean surface.
2. Using the frame insert as a template, cut your clay down to size.
3. Press the clay into the mold. You don’t have to let it dry before you take it out. Cut off any excess Model Magic with your knife.
4. Press the flowers into the clay oval. Normally, in a relief sculpture, the material is carved away to reveal the design. I find this is much easier, haha.
5. I decided to take it off of the wooden plaque and put it in an antique-style frame.
6. A couple of thick coats of paint unifies the piece and makes it look more like a carving, instead of clay just thrown together.
After the paint dries, seal your handmade, aesthetic decor piece, with 2 coats of Mod Podge.
I absolutely love how simple and cute this framed relief sculpture turned out! I think it will be the perfect addition to my future gallery wall.
